Happy Veterans Day From Snow Lizard November 11 2014
Commemorated every November 11th, Veterans Day honors the brave men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forced. First known as Armistice Day, it was proclaimed in 1919 by President Woodrow Wilson, in recognition of those who fought in the First World War. His words about our veterans ring as true today as they did then:
"To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations.”
In 1938, Congress made the day a legal federal holiday to be observed every year, while in 1954, the name was changed from Armistice Day to Veterans Day to emphasize the celebration and appreciation of all veterans that have served in every conflict before and since World War One.
To this day, millions of Americans observe Veterans Day by visiting memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Cities and towns across the country host events to bring attention to the courage, sacrifices, and needs of those who have served. Many people take the opportunity to reflect on the noble sacrifices made by U.S. troops throughout history and to this day.
